Best Ruger 10/22 Triggers (2022) – Reviewed

The Ruger 10/22 is one of the most common rimfire rifle in America. One of the reasons for its popularity is the ease of its customization. Whether if you build a rifle from a stripped receiver, or simply adjusts parts like stocks or scopes to suit your needs, this rifle is very easy to work on.

Ruger’s award winning rifle has the distinction of being the 1st semi-automatic rimfire rifle geared towards adult customers. As opposed to a beginner rifle for starters to learn the basic fundamentals of target shooting and hunting.

Traditionally, the majority of shooters usually will not try to fine tune or adjust the triggers on their own rifles. That is mostly due to the fact that they are often faced with horrific stories of having butchered their own rifles. Or they have completely screwed over their own rifles by creating some kind of problematic filing, sanding, and dremeling parts that they should not have otherwise done, or not knowing what they were doing.

However, when the work increased enough for certain gunsmiths, they will make their own. Some of them became powerhouses in the aftermarket parts industry. Fast-forward to present day, technology has caught up with the Ruger 10/22 in regards to its trigger. Many of these companies currently make drop-in kits to help improve the trigger on their Ruger 10/22s.

Criteria

Just like when you are looking for other upgrades, we have come up with a few quick and simple criteria for you to look at when you are searching for the most suitable Ruger 10/22 trigger.

Material

The material made is one of the important aspects when you want to consider getting a new trigger for your Ruger 10/22. It will determine how long your trigger will last, as you have to see if it absorbs the shock while shooting rounds.

Ruger 10/22 Trigger Weight

The trigger material in some ways contributes to the trigger weight. The trigger weight is the least of your worries, but it still matters in a sense that it helps you determine the overall weight of your gun.

Adjustability

The adjustability matters wtih a sense that some Ruger 10/22 triggers are difficult to work with, and does not allow you to adjust to your needs.

Easy Installation

Some triggers installs pretty easily on your Ruger 10/22 guns. Some others do not. You may want to find one that installs pretty easily on your gun, as you do not want to give yourself a hard time, will you?

The Best Ruger 10/22 Triggers in 2022

Now that we are done with the criteria part, let’s have a look at which triggers are the best for your Ruger 10/22 guns.

1. BX Trigger 10/22 Ruger

SHOP NOW

The BX Trigger 10/22 Ruger is probably the most recent product to hit the market by Ruger itself. A drop-in unit, it has very little over travel and is constructed from lightweight space age polymer.

Its module is set at the factory for a light 2.5 to 3 pound breaking point. It will fit both the rifle and the Ruger Charger pistol, which is also based on the same action as the 10/22.

Despite how it is lightweight, the BX trigger is rugged as well as reliable. According to Ruger, it meets or exceeds the standards of the firearms industry with regards to drop testing.

If it matters for anything, Ruger should make this standard in all of their rifles at the factory. However, it will undoubtedly raise the MSRP of the relatively low-priced 10/22. The fact that Ruger is making them in house may mean that it can come in certain special editions of the rifle sometime in the future. More importantly, it shows that Ruger does listen to its customers.

Its body is CNC milled from 6061-T6 billet aluminum. The factory setting is 2 pounds and breaks like glass with no slack whatsoever, it seems.

The assembly includes an easy to use replacement magazine release button and an improved bolt hold open feature.

As Ruger may have been content to sell an average semi-automatic rimfire rifle, there is another company that basically dedicated their business model to making improvements on the Ruger 10/22 platform – Volquartsen.

Volquartsen’s trigger uses CNC machined housings with all internal parts precision cut by EDM with more or less .0002” of tolerance.

This Volquartsen trigger is a bit pricier than the Ruger triggers we have previously mentioned. The Volquartsen unit makes use of a hardened stainless steel hammer in their trigger pack with properly cut notches. It’s for a precise and consistent angle.

The plunger is re-designed to depress rearward for an improved trigger pull. Couple it with reduced power springs for the hammer and sear, and your trigger will be working as good as new in no time.

This Volquartsen unit also includes improved bolt and magazine releases as well as oversized pins for a perfect action job.

Additionally, to top it off, the pre-travel and over-travel time of the trigger can also be adjusted. The aluminum housing of the trigger assembly has a removable side plate. The side plate is something which helps you with its dis-assembly – just in case you want to clean it.

How To Install a Trigger For Ruger 10/22

It is said that the installation of a Ruger 10/22 trigger inside a weapon is always the most difficult part. Even when it is on a Ruger 10/22 or any other rifles, so to speak.

You will need to have the right information and knowledge about the different parts of the trigger assembly. Also at the same time, you will need to know its function and proper placement. Installing a Ruger 10/22 trigger is not too different.

Let us break it down into smaller steps and give you an overview.

Step 1 – Once you have disassembled your rifle to obtain the trigger assembly, the first step is to remove the magazine release pin. Do this using a small punch.

Step 2 – Then remove the pin that holds the bolt lock in place. Once completed, hold the trigger down and push out the hammer spring and its pin.

Step 3 – Now you can remove the trigger. You have completely dis-assemble your trigger.

If you have a drop-in type trigger assembly for installation, you will just have to follow step 1 mentioned above.

If you cannot seem to follow the steps mentioned, check the video below for a more detailed visual instruction on how to install the trigger on your Ruger 10/22. As all the trigger reviewed here are drop-in assemblies, it will not be difficult to install them into your rifle.

Our Verdict

More than 2 decades ago, it was almost unheard of for an average gun owner to produce a safe 2 to 3 pound trigger job for a Ruger 10/22 rifle in their home workshop. Or even in their kitchen table so to speak.

If you really wish to change certain parts of your gun, we will advise you to bring it to a proper well-trained gunsmith. A well-trained gunsmith will use water stones and files to properly fit each component by hand. The sear will then be polished painstakingly and new springs will be installed. The majority of the time, the original factory parts will be used.

As manufacturing and materials advance, it is not possible to achieve a custom trigger job on a Ruger 10/22 with the only tools being a set of punches. Those “only set of punches” can be used to remove the old pins in order to replace the trigger components.
